Ohrdruf - Where Johann Sebastian Bach spent his childhood

1695 - 1700

The city of Ohrdruf is the smallest of the Bach cities, but in addition to the young Johann Sebastian’s five-year sojourn here, it can also look back on more than 170 years of Bach tradition. The founder of the large branch of the Bach family in Ohrdruf, Johann Christoph, was Sebastian’s elder brother. After the death of their parents in Eisenach, Johann Sebastian went to live with his brother, who was organist at the St. Michael Church and, subsequently, a teacher at the Lyceum Ohrdruf. Johann Christoph was not only Sebastian's guardian, but also his first piano and organ tutor; in this way, he laid the "musical foundation stone" for Johann Sebastian’s subsequent creative works.
