The historical Free Imperial and Hanseatic City with its historic centre and almost completely preserved city wall, 11 Gothic churches and town houses from different eras is well worth a visit. Mühlhausen was considered a centre of Protestant church music. In July 1707, aged 22, Johann Sebastian Bach took up his office as organist in the three-naved hall church, Divi Blasius. His "Ratswechselkantate" was performed here for the first time: "God is my King" (BWV 71). Bach's arrangement for a new organ was implemented in 1709 by the Mühlhausen organ builder Turner and inaugurated by Bach himself.
